What to Expect When You Walk Through Our Doors
We know taking that first step can feel overwhelming. Whether you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, looking for support, or just need someone to talk to, we’re here for you—with compassion, confidentiality, and care.
At 1st Way Life Center, your visit is all about you. Here’s what you can expect when you visit:
A Safe, Confidential Space
From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed into a caring, judgment-free environment. Every conversation and service is completely confidential and offered at no cost to you.
A Friendly, Supportive Team
You’ll meet with a trained staff member or volunteer who is ready to listen, answer your questions, and guide you through the services that best meet your needs. Whether you’re looking for material support or just someone to talk to, we’re here to help.
Personalized Care
Every visit is unique because your situation is unique. Depending on your needs, your visit may include:
- Completing a new client intake with one of our volunteers
- Referrals for community resources such as housing assistance, mental health support, or local food banks
- Signing up for our free parenting and life skills classes through BrightCourse
- Shopping in our Baby Boutique
- Joining our Mom’s Group or attending one of our Client Events
You’ll never be rushed or pressured. We’re here to give you space to process, ask questions, and take the next steps at your pace.
Common Questions About Your Visit
Walk-ins are welcome; however, if it is your first time here, it may be best to make an appointment so as to quicken the registration process.
We have a variety of clients! Dads are always welcome – with mom or as an individual client, himself. In fact, we have some services geared specifically towards fathers. Likewise, we welcome grandparents, foster families – anyone in need who is providing care to little ones ages two and under.
No! We accept clients from all over Illinois and even coming from Wisconsin.
You will be greeted warmly by one of our volunteers and taken into a private consultation room. There they will explain our services and have you complete some paperwork to get registered. After that, our volunteers will show you around the center and take you to the baby boutique where you can pick up free diapers, wipes, formula, baby clothes, and other supplies if needed.
All of our services are provided free of charge. Additionally, our baby boutique has a variety of gently used items that are given out for no charge, as well as free diapers, wipes, baby food, and formula (as supplies last).
All you need is photo ID.
Absolutely! Partners, parents, grandparents, children, siblings, friends – all are welcome. We believe a solid support system is invaluable!
